This program fostered a community of practice among faculty teaching courses that fulfill the college’s new Justice, Equality, and Community (JEC) requirement in order to develop and assess common student learning outcomes. To accomplish this we conducted a half-day workshop in December 2017 to establish outcomes that operationalize the faculty-approved goals and course descriptions for the JEC requirement. Then, these outcomes will be integrated into JEC syllabi. Then, we sampled student work from Spring 2018 courses and evaluated it in Summer 2018. This plan aspired to foster coherence among JEC courses and serve as a pilot for a more comprehensive process to assess and improve the college’s distribution requirements.
Overall, this program allowed us to understand student learning related to JEC and build a community of practice that will serve as forum to reflect upon assessment results and consider improvements to pedagogy. The program has the added benefit of increased compliance with SACSCOC student learning assessment expectations.
